The Sukhoi was carrying 47 people, all Indonesians, with the exception of eight Russians, one French and one American, according Trimarga Rekatama, agent Indonesian Sukhoi. Other sources suggest, however, up to 50 occupants. France's embassy in Jakarta confirmed the presence on board a French.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has called the launch a "thorough investigation" into the reasons for the accident. Wednesday night in Moscow, a source within the Russian Ministry of Industry and Commerce, quoted by Interfax news agency, had assured that preparations for the flight had been made s "in full". "Technically, the plane was in perfect condition," he added.

INDIA: Nearly 105 dead and 100 missing after ferry disaster overloaded

May 1st, 2012

The hopes were dwindling in India Tuesday to find survivors after the sinking of an overloaded ferry that crashed into a river on two of the state of Assam, killing more than 100 deaths and a hundred missing.

The death toll could be one of the highest in Southeast Asia in recent years.

Police said 105 bodies had been recovered so far in the turbulent waters of the Brahmaputra River, where the ferry crashed Monday night in a storm. Despite a maximum capacity of 225 people, the boat carrying about 350 passengers.

Police said that 150 of them were rescued or had managed to swim to shore. The ferry boat had neither a life jacket or life buoys and the chances of finding survivors after a night spent in the water were minimal.

"The poor weather and the river agitated hamper relief efforts," he told AFP the police chief of Assam, JN Choudhury.

Taleb Ali, a farmer of 35 years who survived the sinking, reported that passengers had asked the captain to anchor the ferry to a sandbar when the storm broke out mid-term but the latter flatly refused.

"The storm became more intense and the boat broke in two before sinking," he testified to AFP.

Arun Kalita, a worker employed in building roads, for his part told the cries of the passengers: "I could hear many passengers call God for help. But the water was turbulent and the storm was very severe. Nobody could rescue them, "he added.

Trees uprooted by winds blocked access roads to the crash site, preventing rescue teams to reach the area, officials said in Guwahati.

More rains were forecast in the region Tuesday.

The ship was traveling from the neighboring district of Dhubri Fakirganjan when the accident occurred. Dhubri is located some 300 km from Guwahati, the main city of Assam.

Boats are a common mode of transport in India in the remotest regions but accidents are common due to ineffective safety standards and too many passengers on board.

Latin America blows hot and cold on the crisis in Spain

May 4th, 2012

The announcement of the nationalization of the company of Electricity Transmission (TOT) by Bolivian President Evo Morales, the first Tuesday in May, has sealed a little over Spain. TDE, the first Bolivian electricity grid operator, 99.94% was owned and operated by International Power Network, a subsidiary of Electric Network Spain, since 2002.

Morales, who ordered the Bolivian armed forces to "take control of management and administration" of TDE, would have justified the coup by the lack of investment by Spanish group over the past year, say the Spanish authorities.

The decision of La Paz is not unlike that taken by Argentina a few weeks earlier. On April 16, during a ceremony, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner announced the nationalization of YPF, the largest tanker operator in the country and a subsidiary of Spanish giant Repsol. A reasoned decision, according to the president, by starving investments made in recent months by the company, preference shareholders accused of contempt of development infrastructure. A symbolic slap in the face

Economically, these measures should not have a major impact on the crisis in Spain, according to Sebastian Velut, professor at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Latin America " The economic problems of Spain are too high for these nationalisations have any real impact. It's not a drop of water, including Repsol, but the effects will be felt by small shareholders of the company and the company itself and the country as a whole. " It's more on the ideological attacks that should have a real impact, says expert: "Both nationalization involved in quick, this is obviously not accidental, all that Spain is undergoing a historic crisis. For twenty years, Spanish companies, taking advantage of capitalism on a drip, have adopted a very aggressive towards their South American counterparts. In some countries, the methods used for their implementation were heavily criticized. Some saw a form of neocolonialism. "The Latin American antagonism to a head

Mid-April, at the sixth summit of the Americas in Cartagena des Indies, Colombia, the Latin American countries had shown "that despite differences ideological, they had a common vision of building a similar model of federalism, "said Pascal Drouhaud, vice president of the Institut Choiseul and specialist in the region. In the aftermath of the summit, the announcement of the nationalization of Argentina's YPF occurred. Reactions across the continent have quickly revived antagonisms in Latin America, where Spain is still the fifth largest investor. Not surprisingly, Chavez's Venezuela, followed by Cuba and Uruguay, have supported the decision to Kirchner. Brazil and Peru are, themselves, been more measured, midway between the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance (Alba) and a fringe far more hostile to the e gard the Argentine coup. Three countries with more liberal leanings, Mexico, Chile and Colombia, for their part, openly expressed their dissatisfaction. Mexican President Felipe Calderon, in particular, has insisted that "all developing countries [had] need investment." Same thing in Chile, where the Minister of Economy Pablo Longueira regretted that the attitude of Argentina "masquerading Latin America for a region unattractive" . Love Cow

Pascal Drouhaud, the equation is complex Latin American resolve to Madrid: "They can not immediately withdraw from countries that practice these expropriations to focus more on countries 'friendly'. This is a complicated process that would take several years. In the immediate future, they have no choice but to open negotiations with these governments constraints. After, it is likely that the idea of a 'rehabilitation' of the Spanish strategy running through their heads. "Spain has refused to logically mount & rsquo , Case Bolivian hairpin: "This is not a generalized situation" in Latin America, provides the Spanish Minister of Economy Luis de Guindos, which deviates Mê ; me the idea of a parallel with the expropriation of Argentina two weeks ago. Indeed, unlike Argentina, which came into open conflict with Spain about Repsol, Bolivia is also trying to avoid escalation. As proof, the day of the nationalization of TDE, President Morales also opened a new gas refinery in the country, whose management was entrusted to … the Spain's Repsol. Morales has also used the ceremony to honor the "leadership of Repsol, one of the largest multinational companies in the world" whose "investment will always be respected as a partner." ; a bow which illustrates the ambiguity of relations between Spain and Latin America liberal, already divided between the block of Alba and other countries of "confession" more liberal.

Breivik TRIAL: The Norwegian company licking its wounds in tolerance

April 17th, 2012

This Monday, April 15th is particularly challenging for the Norwegians. Nine months ago, July 22, 2011, Anders Breivik, far-right activist of 32 years, coldly executed 69 young Labour Party on the island of Utoeya and killed eight people in the explosion a bomb in Oslo. Today, Norway is facing the killer on the occasion of the first day of his trial in Oslo.

But at a time when the battered country is trying to understand how he could create such a monster, Norwegian civil society refuses to get caught up in hatred. On the contrary, this bloody day that many Norwegians consider their "September 11" to them, led to a reaffirmation of the values of tolerance and openness claimed es by the Scandinavian company.

"Civil society has responded remarkably to the events, showing unity, dignity and reaffirming its national cohesion," noted Dominique Moisi Political scientist and special adviser of the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI), interviewed by Le Figaro on August 8.

No exceptional justice

Of course, the Norwegians seeking justice - the vast majority of them reject the idea that Breivik not be held criminally responsible for his actions and can be interned in psychiatry - but many approach the day without demanding an exceptional justice or turn security in the country.

"It was an isolated crime (…) Everyone agrees it was the gesture of a madman driven by his political radicalism," said Janne Haaland Matlary, political scientist at the University of Oslo. A view shared by Jean-Yves Camus, a specialist in the far right at the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (IRIS). "The Scandinavian culture is special. There is there a sense of individual freedom extremely loud. A security crackdown is frowned upon because it would not solve much. "

It is indeed true, that the Norwegians refused the act of a madman - so bloody it may be - come sign the death warrant of their values of openness and multiculturalism. "It is important not to give terrorists the ability to change the values they had before," said Bjoern and Ihler, 20, a survivor of the shooting, according to comments reported by the Parisian . "This guy wanted to kill me because I believe in democracy, tolerance and dialogue. If that is why he wanted to kill me, I will continue to fight for these values, "says, meanwhile, Vegard Groeslie Wennesland, a student of 28 years, cited by Reuters.

The far right down

If the tragedy of Oslo has not dealt a fatal blow to the far right - that ideology adhered Breivik -, it has allowed the party to the left of emerge stronger from this ordeal. "In local elections in September, the Progressive Party [far-right party] has registered a marked decline," said Jean-Yves Camus. The Labour Party, he recorded his best score in a quarter century (32%).

The Norwegians may feel that the answer "too" safe in the fight against the "crazy" is psychiatric nonsense. "Psychopaths can occur anywhere - even in civilized societies," wrote about it yet Dominique Moisi in Le Figaro.

"Reclaiming Utoeya"

A study from August 2011 by the UNI Rokkan Center of Bergen and the Institute for Social Research in Oslo, 52% of 2250 respondents were more confident their fellow citizens after the tragedy of Utoya before. More than six in ten also felt they did not feel "very worried" by the possibility of more attacks like this

.

The Norwegian population is not provided inconsistent. "There is definitely a 'Scandinavian culture' should not be confused with permissiveness. There, the police are not armed, the maximum penalty of imprisonment not exceeding 25 years ", adds Jean-Yves Camus. "The Norwegians want to solve the problems of violence without resorting to violence," added the expert.

And they are now trying to move forward. Despite the 69 victims of the shooting, the youth movement Labor affirmed its intention to "reclaim" Utoeya and to organize further gatherings in the future. "There are challenges but we're all in this together and you have drawn from it the most," said Eskil Padersen, the president of the movement. A courageous and strong, not to let "win" Breivik who wanted to "dry up the recruitment of youths Labour". The killer has lost: the youth movement of the Norwegian Labour Party in late 2011 had 46% membership increase over the previous year.
